Moving House at Christmas

Moving House is a stressful experience as it is, without throwing Christmas into the mix!

But there are a few hints and tips that will, we hope, make moving house at Christmas a little less daunting …

Be Organised

Absolutely! Being organised when moving house is hugely helpful, but even more when moving house in the festive season!

First things first. Decide on a Move Date as far in advance as possible, as it will be extremely difficult to organise anything else until you know exactly when you’ll be moving.

Book a Removal Company

If you decide to use a Removal Company, aim to start getting quotes as soon as possible … the earlier you start, the better chance you have of getting your desired dates. The same goes if you decide to hire a van yourself.

And it will have the added benefit of making the move “real” when you confirm the Move Date, which should make Christmas a little less stressful!

Start Packing Early

It doesn’t matter how much “stuff” you have, packing up your belongings always takes longer than you think it will! And possibly an eternity as you waste hours in the attic, looking through old photo albums and memories!

Ideally you should start your packing at least 2-4 weeks in advance. This way, you can tackle it in small manageable chunks, making the process a lot easier. And it goes without saying to overestimate how many boxes you’ll need … better to be looking at them than looking for them!

Get your Christmas Shopping done Early

It is best to have all your Christmas presents bought as soon as possible. Even better, get them all wrapped up and/or sent off before you even begin the moving process!

Expect to be short of time during your move, so DO NOT leave any present-buying until the last minute!

This will take time away from the important task of moving house!

Label the Box containing Christmas Gifts

Try to keep all the presents in the one box. And label it!

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home just before Christmas Day and not know where the presents are!

Clear the Front Drive

We know how fickle winter weather can be in Ireland! Prepare for bad weather … make sure you have salt/grit to hand to clear your front driveway and paths of any snow or ice which could cause problems for you and the movers.

Get your TV and Broadband Supplier sorted

It is Christmas Day morning and your first chance to relax after the last few hectic days of moving. You’re looking forward to settling down on the sofa to watch telly, and the kids have all their computer games to keep them occupied … except …

Have you remembered to book a pre-Christmas installation of broadband and TV?!

Sort out the Bills

Along with forgetting the telly and broadband (except you didn’t!) do you really want to wake up to a freezing cold dark house on Christmas Morning? Make sure you inform your utility provider(s) of your move and get gas/electricity sorted for your new home before you move in.

Change of Address

Make sure to register your change of address, and inform friends and family of your move to avoid any cards (or presents!) being sent to the wrong address. An Post have a Redirection Service that you can make use of, in case anything is still sent to your old home.

Relax!

Remember it’s Christmas! And you’ve move house in one piece! Try your best to forget about the move and take the opportunity to relax and enjoy the time with family and friends!
